Skye Garman Family Guest Blog Finding Your Passion in Life

Skye with her two darling kiddos.

Hi! Today I’m excited to introduce you to my friend Skye. A gal who helped me stay fit during my first pregnancy and someone I truly admire. She’s a great friend, mama and local business owner who is using her passion for fitness to improve the lives of those around her.

Hello everyone! My name is Skye Garman, and I am a fitness trainer here in Reno. My start in the fitness industry actually came about through crisis, which I look back at now and am grateful for.

I spent all of my twenties in recreation. I was a pro ski patroller in Colorado and a river guide in the Grand Canyon. When I moved to Reno, I had a somewhat full-blown identity crisis. It was the year I turned 30, and I went from a very active, mountain/river “I’m so cool” lifestyle in a very tight-knit community to living in a city. I didn’t know anyone, nor did I know what to do with myself.

I felt so out of my element.

After a year or so of floundering around trying to find my place in my new life, wondering what the heck was next, I met Gina Gilbert-Green (who is now my partner in my new lunch time fitness class: Lunch Crunch). A trainer and nutritionist, Gina was my inspiration to jump into the fitness and health industry. It completely put me down a path I never dreamed I would go. I feel so lucky that it turned out the way it did, because I absolutely adore my work!

My formal background in fitness training is from NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) as well as Pilates (The Pilates Coach).  About a year after I completed my certifications and started working, I got pregnant. I knew that holding a typical fitness trainer’s schedule (über early mornings and late evenings) wasn’t going to jive with having a newborn.

Again, thanks to Gina, I found out about Baby Boot Camp. It is a pre and post natal stroller fitness franchise that allows mothers to workout, bringing their babies and strollers in tow to class.  No one had heard of “stroller fitness” in Reno when I bought the franchise, so I really had to get the word out and educate people on what it was all about.

It was my first business, and I had no idea what I was doing, but I loved teaching classes and just forged ahead, determined to make it work. I learned so much in the 4 1/2 years I had it. I helped hundreds of moms get back into shape safely after pregnancy and child-birth.  I was able to bring both of my children to work with me, and I taught all through my second pregnancy.

I met so many wonderful women and their babies, and best of all, I finally felt part of a community that I had created! When I sold my business, it wasn’t about how much money I was going to make off the sale, it was about the new owners being solid enough to keep the business thriving. It is such a wonderful resource for new moms in this community for mental and physical well-being that I felt very strongly that it needed to be a fixture in Reno for years to come.

So far so good!

On Wednesday, Skye will talk about what it’s like being a mamapreneur and how she balances life as a mom and business owner.
